The Annual Review of Pharmacology has reached the age where the charter members of the Editorial Committee are, one by one, completing their terms and being replaced. This is, of course, not altogether sad, for the new members bring new ideas and zeal. However, it is true that the early group who set the goals and format in the Review had become good friends, well adjusted to each other's whimsies, and not a little proud that the idea of the Review seemed to be a good one, appreciated by their fellows. We now thank our emeriti and welcome the new members.

The present volume has stayed close to the now accustomed formula: the presentation of critical reviews of the year's progress in each special area of pharmacology. However, the detailed approach is not always the same in each chapter, for we urge each author to follow the style most his own and to write so that all pharmacologists will enjoy and understand the theme.
